Honor society is a ranking organization that aims at recognizing excellence in people who are perceived to be within a given peer group. There are various disciplines which are okay for students to register exemplary performance, such as in academics and sports. After realizing that there are students who have excelled in the discipline that these organizations focus on, the relevant honor societies they try to persuade the best performers in the disciplines to join and be part of the society. The people who had performed well on the said disciplines, therefore, receive letters from the honor societies educating them further of what the group deals in as far as matters within the discipline are involved. The invitee, on the other hand, is guaranteed to be placed on the list of honor as one of those people who have immensely contributed to and excelled in the discipline that is being looked into.
People who have performed better in terms of academics are often involved in honor societies that concentrate on scholarly excellence. For example, the society will look into the results of students in a particular year with regards to a particular subject. The organization may therefore go ahead to invite that student who performed better as compared to the rest to join their society. The various honor society organization are usually denoted by a combination of colors which they are associated with. Likewise, the members of these groups can be identified by the specific types of outfits and robes that they put on thereby enabling them to be associated with the group. Most of these special identification instruments are not availed to non-members. The honor society may, however, decide to sell them to people during special events that are meant to act as fundraiser to mobilize for money that will be used by the organization.
The presence of the honor societies goes across all levels of education standards ranging from high schools, universities and even the post-graduate levels of studies. Among all these levels, most honor societies involve of those groups that were formed at the university level. Membership in the honor societies has some special attachments. As a result of the need for exclusivity, all the avenues that may lead to a person being a member of more than one group is prevented. As long as a person is known to be associated and registered with a certain group, he or she can no longer be allowed to become a member of another honor society group. In case a person insists so, he may be relieved of his membership in the former group for him to join the other honor society which he thinks best suites him.
